What difference do I make?

What difference do I make?

I am from the Philippines, and I am a high school student. Here in the Philippines we have an adage "Education is the only key to reach our ambition." That is why I want to finish my studies, so I can get a stable job. I’m 18 years old but I’m still in high school. I was not able to go before because of poverty. We don’t have enough money for enrollment.

I’m a Baptist and I believe in Jesus’ coming and I think it’s soon. Based on what’s happening around us - famine, tragedies, earthquakes, war, country against country...

That is why I’m confused whether to continue my schooling or just stay at home and wait for that day... The coming of Jesus.

But what if I’m wrong? What if He has other plans for us? That those signs aren’t enough proof that He’s coming? How about me? My future? Even a janitress needs to be a high school graduate, right? Please help me! I’m worried about my future.

Nowadays when we read the newspaper, or listen to the radio, or watch television, we are bombarded with depressing and frightening news - from the El Nino phenomenon to the war in Sarajevo, floods here and there, and the threat of AIDS. So many unfortunate events happening all at the same time, and we still have to deal with our own set of concerns. This gives us reasons to worry about what the future may bring.

Amidst all these negative events, there are still beautiful things that happen in our daily life. Little wonders like the rising of the sun, and the formation of rainbow after a heavy rain, the miracle of birth and the promise of a new day. These things are all part of God’s grand design. And along with it comes the promise that one day, the King of Kings will make His way on Earth and extinguish all the fear and anxieties of those who believe in Him.

Nobody knows when this day will come. So as we wait, let us continue to remain faithful and loyal followers of Jesus. Let us not allow our fear to stumble us with our walk with Christ. Section 3.29 of the Book of Hope tells us, "Don’t worry about tomorrow. It will take care of itself."
