Music: The Corrs - In Blue

October 13, 2004

Review by Bob Messer
The Corrs
In Blue
143 Records

I had never heard of the Corrs until now. I was surprised to see their discography.

The group is comprised of three sisters and a brother. Andrea Corr-lead vocals, tin whistle, Caroline Corr-vocals, drums, bodhren, Sharon Corr-vocals, violin, Jim Corr-guitar, vocal, keyboards. The mix of the CD is very good. I was pleased when I saw that Robert John Mutt” Lange produced three out of the fifteen cuts.

The first song is Breathless and I’ve heard this song in more than one store during this Christmas shopping season. It’s a happy go lucky love song . Very well done and sung. “Mutt” Lange is at the helm for this one.

Give Me A Reason has an infectious groove that ignites a standard pop chorus. The subject is about a couple on the verge of a “blue” break up. “You’ll never know the love I felt, wanting, waiting for you. It takes a weak heart to forget, follow, follow it through.”

Song number three, Somebody For Someone. The first deep song we come to. The setting opens up with a young girl selling herself in the night. All she wants is ‘somebody for someone’. “And he sees in her an angel in the cruelest of worlds, hiding in the darkness…” Is there really somebody for someone, I’ve got my own opinion on the matter.

All The Love In The World, song number five was also produced by Lange. A power ballad for the new millennium. The song is about someone waiting for that special someone to give all their love to. The positive reflection of this are those who are saving their virginity till marriage. A near impossible task for today’s pop culture.

Radio follows with it’s classic pop rock driving beat. Produced by the Corrs only, this is a good song. It’s about listening to the radio and hearing songs that remind you of somebody. It just proves my point that there is power in music. Just read through Joshua chapter six in the Bible. Music can stir emotion like a wild oceanic storm whips the sea.

Irresistible is a “Mutt” classic sound. Echoing Brian Adams and Def Leppard. A well done song about wanting someone based solely on their looks – I love it!

One Night brings the excitement down with it’s somber rhythmic effect. A one night stand is sometimes okay, is the meaning of the song. All In A Day is just O.K.

At Your Side picks up the pace with an ‘I’ll be there for you’ feel. Uplifting songs with cool violin parts are always a favorite of mine.

No More Cry is a guitar driven fast rapping lyrical song. “I’m telling you, I’m smiling for you only, I’m trying for you souly, I’m praying for you only, I’m singing for you only, I worry for you only…” Good positive song for the encouragement of others.

Rain is a bluesy gospel sounding song with somewhat shallow words.

Give It Up starts up with a hip hop like vibe but looses it. The horn section doesn’t help matters either.

Hurt Before rings in with a moody string section. This song tells a story of a girl of twenty-five who has been hurt before. Only thing is we really don’t know how she was hurt. No closure with this song. Cool violins though. I love the violin.

Rebel Heart finishes the album. It’s an instrumental, and a good one too. It shows off their strong Irish background. Cool, cool, cool!
