A Calling to Serve: Poetic Reflections from a Beat-Up Youth Worker

A calling to serve
Am I following that call?
A home far away from home
Do they love me or hate me
Or do they simply tolerate

An imperfect peg
Misshapen, worn, broken
Hammered into a square hole
I don’t fit their standard
Nobody cares, nobody listens

And so the hammer continues to drive
We will make him fit our desires
Pounding, pounding, pounding…
Each word hits with blunt force
Every strike splinters more away
Who cares if it hurts?
The peg must be forced into the hole

He fits with the young ones
They are as unique as he
The elders have lost their shape
They don’t hear the call
They are square, and they want him to be

Is he larger than life?
Does he dream too big?
The dream stealers lurk in the shadows to beat him down
We will make him small, we will make him fit
Will his faith survive?

Where is God now?
Why does He allow this to happen?
He has nothing to offer
All is spent
Only God can strengthen
Only He knows why

Why is this so difficult?
Is Satan working here?
Lord, protect him from the enemy
Guard his heart and his mind
Give him peace

And so, he surrenders
To only God’s will
God has called, and God provides
No matter the cost, God’s will is worthy
Lord, come fast, and strengthen him in the mire
Guard his heart, guard his mind
Help him to change
Help them to see
Help him to do as Christ
